School History

McGowen Elementary School, is named in
honor of the late Ernest McGowen Sr., a former Houston City Councilman and trustee on the HISD Board of Education. Ernest McGowen Sr. was a lifelong champion of public education and played a significant role in establishing the first vocational technical high school in the Houston Independent School District.

The school was officially renamed McGowen Elementary School in 2013 to celebrate and honor his contributions to education in Houston. The renaming followed a significant community support movement, emphasizing the deep respect and recognition for his impact on local education. McGowen Elementary School is dedicated to continuing the legacy of its namesake by focusing on delivering high-quality education and fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment for its students. The school's mission aligns with the principles of public service and educational excellence that Ernest McGowen Sr. championed throughout his life.

Ernest McGowen Sr. Elementary serves a growing population of approximately 400 students in the heart of the Trinity-Houston Gardens neighborhood in northeast Houston. Our community is culturally diverse and deeply rooted, with families representing a blend of single-family homes, apartments, and multigenerational households. McGowen fosters meaningful family partnerships that reflect the values of the neighborhood. As a trusted cornerstone of the community, our school is a place where students are nurtured, challenged, and celebrated.
